NJ Hiking: Connect

A Social Network for New Jersey Hiking Enthusiasts

Hi all.

I'm very pleased to have found this site/group. Information here helped me to plan the most enjoyable weekend of my summer. Thanks

Gear question;

I'm thinking about purchasing a Garmin GPS MAP 62STC. Can anyone offer advice? Would that device be a good choice as far as downloading tracks/GPX files from this site?

Thanks for any help,

Gabe

Hi Gabe - Glad you found the info on the site useful - awesome!!

We bought a similar model last year, the Garmin 60S, and have been very happy with it. We've always used Garmins, with a 60cs prior the the 62s and we had started out ages ago with a Vista.

I think the model you are considering adds a camera and pre-loaded topos. Depending on your needs, that could be a nice addition or just overkill.

The GPX files on njHiking.com should work with pretty much any GPS as long as you have a method of getting the files into it. For our 60s we use Garmin BaseCamp for the Mac, but they have a PC version too. Free.

Also... a good site for free topos is GPS File Depot. "Boyds Map of New Jersey 2012" is especially handy. You can use BaseCamp to load and view the topo files.
