NJ Hiking: Connect

A Social Network for New Jersey Hiking Enthusiasts

My daughter and I (and dog too!) are looking to hike up to High Point next. We'd like to make it a day long challenging hike. I've looked at the map and there are a number of different places to start. Any route suggestions?

You could try approaching HP by heading south on the AT, starting at roadside parking on Rt 519. We haven't gotten to trying it yet (you should see our hike "to-do" list), but the AT from that direction looks like a steep and possibly the most challenging approach to HP. (Based on looking at the NY-NJ Trail Conf Map #123 of the Kittatinny Trails map set)

Once up on the ridge you could check out the monument, the loop trail, cedar swamp trail. You might get some helpful info from http://njhiking.com/best-hikes-in-nj-high-point-monument-trail.php

There is also the Iris/AT Loop, which is not near the monument: http://njhiking.com/nj-hikes-high-point-at-iris.php - This is a 9.1 loop, but you could make it longer if you want.

Hope that helps some. HP is a gorgeous park, enjoy!
