NJ Hiking: Connect

A Social Network for New Jersey Hiking Enthusiasts

Does anyone know of a good 2 day hike that is a loop or in other words doesnt back track on the next day? I hike alone and having someone pick me up is too much of a hassle. Plus I just dont like the idea of hiking a trail one day and turning around the next morning. Thanks for the help.

Hi Dan - We actually aren't into camping, so it's a little tough for me to give recommendations based on camping locations... but I'd say that most options in NJ would be along the Appalachian Trail corridor, though it's likely you've probably already been checking that out.

That area would have the most potential for loops... like Dunnfield-Sunfish Pond-AT, or something around Mohican Outdoor center like AT-Rattlesnake Swamp, something in Stokes with the network of trails around Sunrise Mountain and Stony Lake etc.

Harriman-Bear Mountain has a huge network of trails for loops too. In southern Jersey, there are a few loop options with Batsto-Atsion... though we're not huge fans of hiking the pine barrens in the summer.

And If you don't have some of the NYNJ-TC maps already I recommend them.

Hi Dan,

Try the Coppermines trail up to the AT and then back on the Kaiser Road Trail - about 6-7 miles total and nice camping along the ridge. Or try the AT from Rte23 in High Point and come back along the Iris Trail.

So how much ground do you like to cover in a trip? That would determine which trails we might suggest. There are a bunch of loops you can make in Harriman.
