Historic Fun Fact: Washington Rock is where a signal beacon warned the Army at Morristown of the British Army's approach.

Trail surface: Moderate, somewhat rocky trails. A few easy stream crossings, and one over the Rayway River that may be tricky depending on water level/rock shifting.

This route: 6.0 miles.

Shorter: There multiple parking areas, trails, and woods roads to create shorter routes. The woods roads also tend to be easier and more level.

Longer: Use the Lenape and Oakdale Trails to add in the other half of the park or extend the route with the Turtle Back trail.

Short: Use the paths around the bogs to truncate RED very early on; not sure of the mileage.

Our two cents: This park contains some of the nicest hiking in the pine barrens. RED is mostly through forest, while GREEN follows along old cranberry bogs. RED is a well planned out, really enjoyable trail and is the more interesting of the two trail loops from this lot – and gets bonus points for a cool suspension bridge. GREEN has more open views of the water areas but it's mostly straight sand roads can get a wee bit tedious – and may push the definition of "hiking" for some.

Our two cents - This is a long, remote, mostly shady route through dense forest with a lookout tower in the middle of the hike. The tower is basically the only view until getting back to the stream at the end. For that reason we recommended this route only for avid hikers who enjoy simply being in the woods. Beginners or casual hikers should stick to the shorter trails around the Musconetcong River in the main part of the park.

Great photography and birding opportunities; vast bay views. Osprey build nests in the spring, and we spotted one less than 5 minutes from the parking lot - bring a telephoto lens or binoculars (we use a lightweight monocular). The trails are very easy and are better suited for short loops from the main parking lot; a loop longer than 6.9 isn’t really possible. This is one of NJ’s beachy hikes and may not fit your definition of “hiking”. Some road noise along RED.

Easy, flat, no elevation changes. Soft, pine needle or sand surface. Potentially wet areas and crossings. A section of the YELLOW trail was completely impassable the day we hiked, and we couldn’t complete the loop.

Our two cents: There is a lot of variety in this park and plenty of visually interesting areas to photograph. The trail network is well planned and offers a lot of route flexibility. In addition to the marked trails, there are many paths around the bogs. But like many areas in the Pine Barrens, a good portion of this park is on wide sand roads or around old cranberry bogs which might push the definition of ‘hiking’ for some.

Our two cents: We found the Purple trail didn’t match the map, or there is a loop within a loop thing going on, or maybe because the trail was snow covered we missed the obvious.

Trails would be good for snowshoeing but be sure to stay on the edges and avoid going on the fields with tall native grasses. Stick to hiking Sundays during hunting season.

Our two cents: Worthwhile for a moderate or short hike in a pretty, farm-filled area of central Jersey. This park was recommended to us multiple times but we kept avoiding it as it’s known more for biking. It wasn’t an issue at all on the chilly winter days we went (ratio of bikers to hikers was about 50-50), but on a nice summer day your results may vary.
