The Hiking in NJ During Hunting Season page with schedules, rules, and resources has been updated for the 2012-13 season. The page also collects a bunch of blaze orange clothing, hats, packs and doggie gear that's available to keep you and fido safe on the trail.
I've also created a calendar PDF of the dates again this year. Enjoy.

I know we've been over this territory before, but I need a refresher. Our plans have been changed to hike Virginia next week (pushed up till following week). So we'd like to do Minnewaska this Saturday. Any info on hunting schedule up there? Thanks much.
Linda
Linda - I'm not as well versed in NY/PA hunting regs as in NJ. Been meaning to gather up that info but usually after weeding thru the NJ info I am usually fried - ha!
Deer hunting is allowed in sections of Minnewaska... this old 2010 map shows you'd be fine in the main trail section of the park... but of course it's a 2010 map and I haven't stumbled on anything newer. Still might want to play it safe and don your finest Blaze Orange attire.
Are you planning on doing Old Rag when you head down to Shenandoah? We did that park in '05 and that hike was a fun scramble to a beautiful view (popular though...).

I had a 2009 hunting map of the area which jibes with the 2010 one to which you linked btw. I'm glad I decided to call Minnewaska this a.m. as a "just in case". Typical of the seemingly erratic, ambiguous and ever-changing nature of hunting areas/days/times/moments, etc., the park official told me "All of the Jenny Lane Path is now within the hunting area."
So now we'll have to walk down Rt. 44/55 and pick up The Mossy Glen Trail and start our hike from there. The Lower Awosting Carriagwy, which would have been another alternative to start, is also still closed or as the official told me "illadvised to hike" since much of that section was washed away by Irene. Ah well....as luck would have it I just purchased two new spiffy, blaze orange jackets and a scarves for us to take to Virginia. So we'll just get to break them in early.
Speaking of which, thanks for asking about Old Rag. Most definitely..."yes", and by doing it during the week instead of a weekend we're hoping to hedge our bets with smaller crowds.

Oh that's interesting, good thing you called. I wish they could keep up with posting PDFs of this stuff, sure would make planning easier.
It's hard to keep up with the changes. For example, Cheesequake is doing deer hunting again this year... and that was our go-to non-hunting option for ages. I can't imagine how many people show up there for a romp thru the woods and have no idea.

A big THUMBS-UP to NJhiking for pulling all this info together. Thanks!
Paul - you're welcome!
