Just wondering if this story was still online. Glad it is. Though I doubt anyone has read it in years.

Wow, Linda, that sounds even scarier than my hike. Although had I pushed stubbornly onward (as I usually do) on that nonexistent trail, I would have been in pretty much that situation: all turned around in the dark, no trail, trying to phone for help. No fun. Thanks for reading and for your compliments.

You relate your adventure, Bob, with such vivid suspense that I think I read it all without blinking! It reminded me of some similar "Lost-In-The-Pine-Barrens' Experiences" we've had as well.

Mostly it rekindled shudders of getting lost as sunset approached and passed us when we returned up the Buttermilk Falls Trail in the Del. Nat. Rec. Area in Jersey about 1-1/2 years ago. We'd missed the turnoff onto the AT where it joined the Falls Trail and had mistakenly gone down a fire road for two miles before we realized our wrong turn. We doubled back and fell victim to the usual plight of even the most experienced hikers (which we certainly were not at the time) we got turned around several times and were ultimately quite lost. That was before we got our GPS, which I even wonder would have helped us all that much. While I prepared for DH and I to hunker down somewhere for what looked to be a very, very, very long night, DH finally managed to get a cell phone signal and we were talked out by a Park Ranger.

A three-mile rather, er "swift" hike in total darkness, save for our head Petzels, finally got us back to our solitary car in the parking pull off lit only by a similar sliver of a moon as you had to guide you.

Thanks for the too-true tale and the shared goosebumps. Glad you made it back safely.

Thanks for reading. I called the NJ Conservation Foundation that oversees this preserve and they did confirm bow hunters could have been in the area. They do allow hunting. Doesn't make me feel much safer knowing this, but at least I know there's a chance these weren't poachers. I suggested they have hunters post something at the entrance telling people they're there. It would have been nice to know this before I started hiking.

Sounds like you had an adventure. I'll have to say the times we've gotten really turned around and actually needed our GPS to get back to the car... were in the Pine Barrens. All that pine and sand trails can really look the same and sometimes the blazes are a little... vague.

There is no gun hunting on Sundays at all but there is bow hunting in certain areas now on Sundays... perhaps that is the truck you saw.
