I'm aware of the state DEP listing of "closed" parks, but it doesn't seem they update it very often, or there's just that much damage that you should pretty much assume waiting until practically the…Continue

Schooley's Mountain Park

Since I frequent Schooley's Mtn, living in town, I have noticed a few things that have changed in the past couple years that the maps don't show.-The Green "Boulder Gorge" trail used to head down a steep drop, cross a gravel driveway (which leads to a house) and over Electric Brook and back up into the park along the far bank of the stream. Now (since at least the time of Irene I would guess since that's when I noticed) it has been terminated at the gravel driveway and there is a sign saying…See More

njHiking.com replied to Erik Fecher's discussion Any good hikes in the Morris/Hunterdon area that wouldn't be hindered by hunting?
"Hi Erik - Morris County has the same rule as Hunterdon, that county parks are no-hunting on Sundays. We generally just always wear orange in season, and while we try to avoid hunting parks it just becomes really difficult to plan hikes around that…"

"Hi Erik, As an occasional hunter as well as a hiker, maybe I can help. Right now, in Hunterdon and South Morris, two seasons are in progress: Permit Shotgun, which runs til Feb. 7, and Winter Bow, which ends Feb. 16. At that time all deer hunting…"

Any good hikes in the Morris/Hunterdon area that wouldn't be hindered by hunting?

Are there any good parks to hike in around this time of year where you don't have to watch out too much for the hunting programs? I usually wear orange during the late fall/winter anyway, but with the hunting programs going on, and their somewhat confusing dates and times, it's hard to know if it'll be safe to roam the parks even in bright colors. It's not usually the shotgun hunters I'm worried about, you hear them when even from a distance when they shoot something and just keep away from…See More

"This helps. Like I said I drove past Allamuchy North at the parking entrance to the Sussex Branch and saw a couple cars in there, no signs though warning of closures. Just didn't want to go in myself and find out sometime later a ranger was…"

njHiking.com replied to Erik Fecher's discussion Trail Conditions in western Morris / Warren / Hunterdon area?
"Hi Erik - They're closed until they can assess the many miles of trails as well as remove the downed trees etc. - it's a safety issue as well as it's probably easier to do trail cleanup without hikers around. They are making huge…"

Trail Conditions in western Morris / Warren / Hunterdon area?

I'm aware of the state DEP listing of "closed" parks, but it doesn't seem they update it very often, or there's just that much damage that you should pretty much assume waiting until practically the spring to see trails open officially again. Anyone been to places like Musconetcong Gorge, Jenny Jump, Allamuchy or other local medium sized parks? Only reason I'm interested so much right now is that I'm doing  web site project for school and could use one more of these sites for content (visiting,…See More

Some updates from Allamuchy Mountain - North (new Pink blaze trail?)

Was just up for a nice end of week hike in Allamuchy Mountain in the Byram area. Finally decided to take the "Ice Cream Trail" since from what I'm hearing as long as you don't venture to the left of the trail, you're still in the park and not on the Scouts reservation and you're good. Plus it's the best way to get to the summit. Well, I got to the summit but wasn't quite able to locate the survey marker, plus a nice size Black Racer wouldn't let me lol - careful, they shake their tails against…See More
