"Everybody is making good points on this thread.  I hate to see the media blow this bizarre incident out of proportion.  Bears and humans are sharing a habitat and that can lead to conflict.   I don't see bears in the Pine Barrens…"

backpacking Stockbridge Mountain

My hiking partner wife finally agreed to backpack with me on an overnight and it went so well that I thought I would share.  We parked at Lake Tiorati in Harriman State Park, and backpacked mainly on the Long Path about 3.5 miles to the summit of Stockbridge Mountain, where we found lots of tent spots and several fire rings.  There is a manmade shelter there, as well as a natural rock…See More

"The most logical explanation for the bear's aggressive pursuit is that someone dropped a granola bar.  I have had many close encounters with black bears and never found them to be aggressive at all."
