2014 NJ Fall Foliage Reports

Autumn color can be fleeting and elusive, so to help others in search of where the color is around New Jersey (as well as nearby areas in PA/NY), you can post Fall Foliage updates in this forum.

For a list of foliage resources, check out our "NJ Fall Foliage" page.

(If you have foliage resources we don't have listed there - web sites, twitter feeds, or whatnot - post them here and we'll add to our foliage page)

Post the park or area, the amount of color (ie, unchanged, low, medium, peak color), and the date, and we'll add the report to the "NJ Fall Foliage" page. Include a photo if you have one!

Just starting to notice a hint of color in some trees in the Ramapos

Minnewaska State Park - 9/7/2014

More color than I expected to see in the Gunks. This is from the High Peter's Kill Trail.

Fall appears to be gearing up a bit earlier this year. This weekend we noticed a slight yellow hue to leaves along the Turnpike down into southern NJ and as well as north on the Rt. 287 corridor. Already several weeks ago we started seeing little pops of color in the Gunks and Harriman SP.

Wildcat Ridge - Four Birds Trail / Splitrock Reservoir - 9/14/14

We encountered unexpected amounts of leaf drop and yellow leaves along Four Birds trail, and some slight color around the edge of Splitrock Reservoir. But not much of any change from the Hawk Watch.

Cheesequake State Park, Matawan - 9/20/14

We didn't expect any color in central Jersey, but encountered some slight coloring appearing at water's edge. Two park notes: 1) Bow hunting is again at Cheesequake this season. I wasn't sure as the park site had made no mention but there was a sign on the way in. 2) the Blue trail has reopened.

Turnpike south to exit 7 - some slight color too.

Bear Creek Preserve, Poconos, PA  - 9/21/14

Some nice color starting in the Poconos.  Delaware Water Gap is still pretty green, just a little bit of color here and there all along I-80.

High Point State Park, Sussex County - 10/5/14

High color (70-80%) found within the park. This coming weekend likely to see peak color.

Around NJ...

Rt. 287 Corridor from New Brunswick to Rt 80: Low, 10% or less

Rt 206 through Chester to Rt. 80: Low, 10% with areas of moderate color

Rt. 206 through Newton: Moderate, 50-60%

Rt 15 - Moderate 40-60% with spots of high color

Cheesequake State Park, Matawan - 10/21/14

Moderate color (30-40%) found within the park.

South, south Jersey - 10/24/14

Cumberland County area, Vineland, Millville, Bridgeton etc - low color with a lot of green still.

Norvin Green State Forest - Osio Rock, Torne Mountain, Lake Lerriwein - 10/26/14

North NJ, Highlands region; Bloomington, NJ; Passaic County

Nice high to peak color with a smattering of green. Plenty of leaf drop (30-40%) from the winds this week. The color here might hold thru to next weekend but hurry!

View from Osio Rock - NYC skyline in the distance

Lake Lerriwein; Hewitt Butler Trail to Camp Vacamas parking.

Parvin State Park - 11/3/14

Heavy rains and wind has taken a toll even in southern NJ. A considerable amount of leaf drop has dulled the colors but there are still pockets of good color to be found.

Central NJ is moving past peak but still has good color found throughout areas of leaf drop. Color seemed to boost around exit 4.

Palisades Interstate Park, NJ - 11/8/14

There is still some gorgeous foliage in the Palisades.  This is the Englewood Cliffs - Tenafly section.

Palisades - Alpine HQ to Forest View to Closter Dock - 11/9/14

Beautiful peak foliage mixed in with some areas of bare trees. Lots of bright yellows.

Early November is peak for the Palisades... and I always forget that. In fact, we had another hike planned in central Jersey, knowing foliage could be ok or it might be eh at this point in the season — until Daniela posted her Palisades pics the nite before.

I slapped my forehead, chucked different maps into the bag, and picked out a loop on the drive to the park.
