"The scenery is great in NJ, as are the bears. I had some wonderful encounters with the bears there. Not only that, one can find food easily along the way through NJ."

Hi All: Just wanted to wish everyone a great new year in 2012. Even though I'm sitting here in Sarasota, Florida in 70° weather, my heart is out there somewhere on a trail trying to stay warm in the December weather. Jane and I walked the Camino de Santiago, in Spain, this year, during September/October. It was fantastic, if very different from the AT. No bears and many more hikers, something like 220,000 this year! There were villages typically every 5-10 km, so carrying food wasn't…See More

What is your favorite NJ trail or park?
Appalachian Trail

My funniest moment hiking the A.T. was in NJ!

I had numerous funny moments on my hike of the A.T., but none was funnier than an event with a female bear at Wawayanda State Park. I won't go into the explicit details because it would spoil it for anyone reading my book, Three Hundred Zeroes, but I ended up in a very compromising position with the bear and I think we were both seriously traumatized for some time.

I was seriously impressed with the NJ remoteness, it wasn't what I expected. I was also surprised at the number of rattlesnakes in that region. This was not the NJ that I had expected at all.

Bear injures two boys on NJ section of AT

Posted on August 4, 2011 at 10:07am 8 Comments

Two boys injured by yearling bear encounter.

The thing that caught my eye was that there have only been 16 sightings this year? I had four just on my trek across NJ on the AT in 2008. I suppose most people don't report them. Anyway, I guess this bear was aggressive and a warden fired a shot and hit it, but I don't know what happened to the bear.

The boys did…

Hi Dennis, Glad you enjoyed the photos. :)

I was intrigued by one of your posts to the forum. You wrote a book about the AT?! I'll have to pick up a copy. I'm knee deep in an AT book binge right now!! Someday I'd like to do the AT myself, and since it's not possible right now, I'm living vicariously through the accounts of others. Pleased to meet you :)

Hi Dennis - You may want to contact the NY/NJ Trail Conference, they sometimes coordinate speakers/presentations, or may know of groups looking to offer one. They are located in northern NJ, in Mahwah, and their site is http://www.nynjtc.org.

And I added your book to our site's book page, which is here: http://www.njhiking.com/nj_hiking_books.php

I finished reading your book last night and I must say the mental image of you and the bear will be with me every time I am in Wawayanda State Park from here on out! I had just finished the part about the rattlesnake/log incident in CT on Saturday night only to find myself hiking in CT the next day, closely examining every log before stepping over it. Really enjoyed your book. The title was so appropriate once I figured out what it meant. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Especially considering your circumstances, that was quite an accomplishment!

And to think I have hiked the A.T. in NJ often and have never seen a bear or rattlesnake on it. Go figure. Dying to find out what happened with you and your bear so I'll just have to get your book!
