Recommendations for an AT loop with an overnight at Hemlock Pond?

Started this discussion. Last reply by TJ Karakowski Sep 5, 2014. 2 Replies

Last spring some buddies and I did fun trip to the DWG and camped at Bear Creek.  The accommodations were pretty much primitive, but its still a campground with people nearby, etc...  Next year I'd…Continue

Some friends and I are headed up to the DWG to do some camping from May 3rd to 4th.  It's primarily going to be a guys weekend-just a bunch of old friends from childhood now scattered across the…Continue

Curiosity off of the Appalachian Trail in High Point/Stokes

Started this discussion. Last reply by TJ Karakowski Sep 21, 2013. 5 Replies

I was combing through some topographic maps looking for old farm roads and remains of old homesteads swallowed up by Stokes, High Point, and the DWG.  NJ history is as much a hobby as hiking for me.…Continue

"Again, to be fair to the hikers, if they followed what seems to be the "conventional wisdom" about NJ black bears, they would have assumed that the bear was harmless and that the other hikers were overreacting.  The lesson here is…"

"I think we will see more there eventually as there are bears down there, just not many.  Migration through the midsection of the state I think presents the biggest barrier.  There are corridors for wildlife to pass through heavily traveled…"

"That's not been stated in any report about the attack.  This was a bear that was far too comfortable around humans, which is the problem with a large portion of the bear population in New Jersey.  Younger, smaller bears like this one…"

Recommendations for an AT loop with an overnight at Hemlock Pond?

Last spring some buddies and I did fun trip to the DWG and camped at Bear Creek.  The accommodations were pretty much primitive, but its still a campground with people nearby, etc...  Next year I'd like to go up there, park somewhere, and do a loop on the Appalachian, overnighting at Hemlock Pond, and returning to the cars the next day.  Does anyone know if overnight parking is permitted at Blue Mountain Lakes or Crater Lake if you're hiking the AT?  I know that the areas are closed from 10:00…See More

"Hank - How is that campground (Bear Creek"). Any plus/minus to it versus camping at Stokes or Swartswood for $20/night or along the AT (ie more scenic, less crowded, great bar, etc?). -TJK"
