Cheesequake S.P. – Green and Yellow Trails - 1/5/13

cheesequake-green-trailWe had limited time this weekend and only could manage a quick hike at our go-to park for that, Cheesequake State PArk.

While there, we figured we may as well collect new GPS data on the change to the GREEN trail, and also the small reroute around the damaged boardwalk in the cedar swamp.

The GREEN is now a tad longer at around 3.3. The main reroute is around the Atlantic cedar swamp section. The other main new area is a reroute around a section that is always wet and muddy.

We've revised our hike directions for this, and posted GPS tracks on our Cheesequake State Park- Green Trail page.

Miles: 4.0

Dawn - Did you notice if they are still open for hunting?

Daniela - yes, a sign was posted as you entered and there were a few along the trails. We went anyway - wore orange and left a little later in the morning figuring the hunters wouldn't be out at that time likely, esp. with more people there.

Having hunting in that park really perplexes me - with it being so small and right next to houses I can't figure why they don't just do one of those week long hunts where they close the whole park off.

They only allow hunting with bow and arrow.  As long as the safety measures are followed it is a great tool to control the deer herd.

Al - Many hikers just prefer to avoid parks with hunting altogether. Whether it's a bow/arrow or a gun, there is still someone potentially shooting around you. The probability of anything happening is very low – but it's still there.

For a small park like Cheesequake it might make more sense to just close it for a bit. It used to be a great non-hunting option for hikers all season long and there are few places like that.
