Allaire State Park - 11/05/11

JORBA maintains multi-use trails south of the Manasquan River in Allaire State Park and their map is available online.  Although I read about trails north of the river, I could find no map online.  NJ DEP kindly sent me a copy and here is a scan of it.  What is nice about these trails is that loops can be formed with multi-use and hiking only trails, I double checked with the park - none of the trails north of the Manasquan River fall in a hunting zone (south of the river is part hunting zone) so this is a good option during hunting season, and if you are into birding, I have never seen so many birds anywhere else.  What is not so nice is LOTS of I-195 traffic noise along the way, litter, poorly marked trails and not all trails are on the map.  There are some connector trails that knowing about in advance would have allowed for better loop planning.  My favorite trail was the yellow trail to the Manasquan River, accessible from the historic village - VERY difficult to follow with blowdowns, flood debris and missing blazes so it was more challenging but very scenic and quiet.  Click here for the hike details.

We haven't been here in such a long time, probably using the old 50 Hikes in NJ book... and got a bit turned around! Need to revisit.

If this is of any help, here is a map with the missing trails added that I wish I would have know about ahead of time.  Hot pink lines are trails, pale pink is a road.  The purple trail on the map is the paved bicycle trail but it is not blazed.  There are no green blazes through the village, at least none that I saw.

Remembering how it was before we could find park maps online... and having to rely on books and/or hope there was a map when you got there....
