Biking in the Huber Warbler Preserve

On a Saturday in October, I brought my mountain bike back to the Huber Warbler Preserve to see if I could finally reach the back trails. On all my hikes, I never got much farther than the creek crossing. The trails are not great for biking. The sand on the main roads doesn't give great tire traction, and on the smaller side trails, which don't get much use, you're mostly riding on close-cropped foliage stems.Still, the leaves were pretty in the fall, and it was pleasant enough. A number of deer…See More

"Wow, Linda, that sounds even scarier than my hike. Although had I pushed stubbornly onward (as I usually do) on that nonexistent trail, I would have been in pretty much that situation: all turned around in the dark, no trail, trying to phone for…"

Lost...in the Michael Huber Prairie Warbler Preserve

The setting sun in the Pine Barrens should have been an ominous sign for me. Instead, the fading light on a beautiful fall day only accentuated the calm and beauty of the quiet woods around me. The chill of the coming evening invigorated me, pushing me onward into the waiting pines.Little did I know that a scant hour later I would be lost and bleeding, running blindly through the night…See More

"Thanks for this report. Nice to know it's pretty empty in winter. I'd like to try XC skiing there. Is it too overgrown in the back sections for that, do you think? Did you see any hunters there in winter? I went there in Nov. and…"
