South Mountain Reservation - Hemlock Falls - 12/11/15

Posted on December 15, 2015 at 3:42pm 5 Comments

Moderate hike that takes in a viewpoint from historic Washington Rock, Hemlock Falls, and the Rahway River.

Historic Fun Fact: Washington Rock is where a signal beacon warned the Army at Morristown of the British Army's approach.

Trail surface: Moderate, somewhat rocky trails. A few easy stream crossings, and one over the Rayway…

Mercer County Park - 11/29/15

Posted on December 4, 2015 at 6:31pm 0 Comments

Easy trail that skirts the edge of Lake Mercer, travels through woods and along fields and streams.

5.0 miles, easy surface: packed dirt, some roots/mud, mostly level.

Our two cents: While we normally avoid built-up parks like this, the eastern section of the park loop is all trails and is quite nice. It is a little…

That's great, thanks for the local help. My plan is to run the trail one day, camp on the other side, and run it back the next day. I checked Uber and Lyft and they both say they have support in Atlantic city. I suppose I could rent a car or take a normal cab if necessary. I've never been to Jersey before, I'm from upstate New York though so I'm familiar with the type of trails and things to expect up there, although Batona looks pretty flat. I have a fascination with all things Cryptid and have always wanted to get into the Pine Barrens because of the Jersey Devil legend. Going for a good trail run is as good of an excuse as any to get up there.

Hello Dawn, thank you for the welcome. I came here with a question. I'm a runner and hiker in Florida and was looking at doing the Batona trail in April. Does anybody have any suggestions on where to start and stay? I was looking at Bass River because it's close to the airport. Would it be pretty easy to stay the night there and catch an Uber ride to Bass river for an early start the next day? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Dawn thanks for the welcome. Do you do any shorter hikes as a group? I recently started hiking mainly ramapo reservation. I don't want to commit to a 5+ hour hike just yet. I'm interested in meeting new people and enjoying the outdoors. Any help you could provide would appreciated.
